Dahvin VonEiff
Patroling the camp had always been a mindless task in the past. Now Dahvin has something to think about, Diane. Events of the previous day had been exciting to say the least. Dahvin was distracted with thoughts of the beautiful woman who looked exactly like his wife and thoughts about her gorgeous body.
Why can’t I get her out of my head? I’m going nuts. I thought I wasn’t going to be close to anyone ever again, to spare myself the hardships of death and everything else great about this world. Oh, well at least now I have something to think about when I… hey what’s that?
Dahvin sees something shiny off in the trees and decides to investigate. Not wanting to make a mistake Like Arthur’s from the previous night, Dahvin wakes up Kate to make sure someone is on alert in the camp. Going out into the trees he finds a man setting up a claymore with a mirror attached.
How dumb is this asshole? The only reason I saw him is that stupid mirror. Well I guess it’s time to find out what is going on.
“Who are you and what are you doing with that claymore” Dahvin shouts in the tone he learned to use as a Sergeant in the MPD. The man stopped immediately and started walking towards Dahvin. Dahvin noticed immediately that he was acting drunk so he warned him and pointed his gun at him. When he grabbed at Dahvin’s gun he decided to shoot him in the leg. Soon afterwards Jane and Kate came running and distracted him long enough for the man to pull a gun on Dahvin.
Fuck, Damn. Hell. I can’t believe I let my guard down. What the hell is wrong with me? I wonder what Diane is doing right now?
While they try to figure out what to do about the man he collapses from blood loss. With a collected sigh of relief they drag the body away only to hear someone coming through the trees. Again to their relief I turnes out to be Arthur on his bicycle. Dahvin immediately notices the bloody figure on the bike, a hooded female. As soon as he recognizes the hood, Dahvin’s feel his heart drop into his stomach. He helps Arthur get Diane off of the bike and over towards Jane and Kate. Dahvin could smell the blood, there was so much of it in the air he could taste it.
I haven’t seen this much blood since my wife died, since I saw her and my daughter dead. It’s like a scene from my nightmares, the scene I can’t get out of my memories.
Jane began looking Diane over and eventually came to the determination that Daine would die. Right then and there, Dahvin didn’t know if he really was alive or dead. He didn’t have any thoughts whatsoever, just a blankness. He began to beg Jane to help her, hoping there would be some miracle. She gives him a weak smile, with a deep look of sympathy. By using the massive first aid kit Jane found they manage to test their blood and find that Jane is a match. After the transfusion finished they went to sleep and Dahvin didn’t sleep at all.
The next morning as they all ate breakfast Dahvin could do nothing but look at Diane and pray.
Please God, don’t let it happen again, don’t let her die on me.
In the middle of his thought they hear a noise in the trees like horses, causing Diane to sit up and shout “RUN!” They grab their gear and run away, Dahvin carrying Diane. As they ran there was a loud explosion from in the trees (the forgotten claymore) which had scattered the horsemen. Grabbing one of their horses the group took off, Dahvin making sure that Diane was safe on the horse with Jane.
I don’t care if I have to die by these horsemen, I have to make sure she lives.
Before the Horsemen recover they get away, not even taking the time to look back. On their way Diane mentions a bike store to the south they could head towards as she knows the owner. When they arrive there though, blood was heavy on the air again. When they enter the shop, they could see that blood was covering the floor and counter. Behind the counter they see a little boy who introduces himself as Harvey Jr. Everyone could notice he is frightened and on the verge of tears. Jane and Kate began to get misty eyed at this boy.
He probably reminds them of what they went through in their village. Seeing it burned down and your family killed off, I have to imagine they feel for this kid.
Eventually a man walks out and after standing between the group and Harvey jr., he introduces himself as Harry and explains what had happened. “There were a group of people in here before and they fed my husband to their bear, for no reason. Gary was a nice guy, maybe a bit cocky but he wouldn’t give anyone a reason to kill him.” Dahvin pulls the others aside and they debate what to do. Jane and Dahvin want to go after them and dispense justice while Arthur and Kate want to leave them alone.
I can’t believe Arthur is so far gone from our MPD days that he doesn’t even see that something needs to be done. How can we let people get away with feeding people to a bear? I don’t think we are going to be friends for very much longer. I don’t even know this person he has become.
When Dahvin tells Harvey “We will get them for you son” Harry begins to thank them profusely.
I have to do it, my own family was torn apart just like this one. I do not want this kid to grow up thinking that bad people get away with bad things, he has to know that there can be justice and order.
Harry gives the travellers his assistance and they leave to go hunt the raiders down. That night Kate wakes Dahvin when a pack of wild dogs come sniffing at their camp.
This reminds me of the times my daughter Rachel used to wake me in the night because she had bad dreams or she heard a noise. I wonder how someone could stay so innocent for so long?
After tossing some leftovers the dogs go away and the group is left to rest for the battle the next day.
